The Diable Rouge (Red Devil) lift at les Deux Alpes has become a symbol for the station. First opened in 1956 the current gondala system dates from 1972 but after 40 years of loyal service has become too expensive to maintain. Replaced over the summer the 80 numbered “red eggs” are now sitting in front of the town swimming pool. A number of clients have asked if they could buy a bit of ski history. Due to the strong demand the lift company (DAL) and the tourist office have decided to auction them to the highest bidder.

The auction will be held on Saturday 3rd November 2012 outside the Tourist Office at 16h30. You can view the eggs between 10h and 12h on the same day. Each is numbered. Egg no 80 will be given away in a competition to be held on Easter Monday, 2013. Expect to pay at least 150 euros each!

Who knows, one day you may see a Diable Rouge gondola in a hotel, a restaurant, a friend’s apartment or even your own back garden, perhaps a long way away from their mountain home.

You would have had to reach deep into your pocket, they sold for around the 900-1000 euro mark each! Not a bad day for the ski area.

They sold luckily a bit cheaper each, since the resort raised a grand total of 45.000€ out of the 79 minus 1 gondolas for sale (the last one will be given as a prize of a future lottery - in fact as an Easter Egg).
That’s about 580€ each. Still expensive for what used to be considered as a rubish and cost a lot to the resort to recycle.

Some sold at 200€, some at 1000€.
It’s surely a piece of history, but not the best you can get (i.e. the so-called 4-glass-egg).

thanks for the detailed information, was there a big difference in the quality of the gondolas? Or did interest taper off later on in the sales?

Have you sol all these red eggs in auctions or still have few ?
I will keep this in my garden as antique sitting which will also keep alive the red eggs amenity in my mind.
