This isn’t the first incident in this area, there’s been a handful over the years. Glacier 3000 has a few flattish runs on the top and a couple of good ones leading down towards Reusch. But there’s some serious and steep ground from the top on the main face under the col du Pillon. There was a Freeride event there recently :

You can see the attraction of the terrain but it’s fairly serious. there’s some exceptionally steep lines and if you take a wrong turn you’ll go over big cliffs. One of the things I’ve noticed in the 10 years I’ve lived in the area is how many more people ski these lines. 10 years ago it wasn’t so common, now, even on terrible days you’ll see it heavily tracked in a few hours. I’ve ridden the lift a few times and exchanged alarm with the lift guys and other skiers a few times this season.

These were guys local to the region without any gear, there’s been some strong criticism locally as you can imagine!

Yes I read the criticism in the press, quite strong stuff. Sounds nasty for the rescue services with the helicopter having to fly in a white-out.

“They were skiing in a very dangerous place where they really should not have been today”, according to Christian Reber, senior member of the Diablerets rescue services.

I was riding that lift a few days ago with the organiser of the Giant X Tour and I was speculating how long before the first rescue intervention would be. Should have had a bet on!
