using Nokia phones with integrated GPS - locate your position on IGN and OS paper maps

Several Nokia Series 60 phones now have integrated GPS - useful for locating your position when touring.  The default software in Nokia phones supports latitude and longitude coordinates in decimals degrees.  But IGN maps in France are marked in “UTM” grid coordinates, and OS maps in UK are marked in “OSGB” coordinates.  So I wrote a free “beta” software that converts the GPS coordinates from decimal degrees into UTM and OSGB coordinate formats.  With these coordinates, you can locate your position on a paper map.

It can also do some other useful stuff, like converting manually entered UTM and OSGB coordinates and saving these as Landmarks in decimal format in the Nokia device for use with other navigation applications in the phone. If you have a Nokia phone S60 supporting GPS such as N95, E90, 6110 Navigator - do try it.

PS: if anyone has seen IGN map software for Nokia phones (like http://www.bayo.com software for PC and Windows mobile) please post here.

I’ve tried this software on my phone but I think it works for v3 but not v2 (which my phone is).  Any chance of a v2 version?

I love touring in france but cant use my gps with the maps.

Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave, for this application to work, the mobile phone must support something called “Java JSR 179 Location API” and I don’t think v2 (S60 2nd Edition) devices support that unfortunately… Which phone model do you have?  Cheers, Guy

Hi, I’ve a Nokia N70.  I dont think its possible to upgrade the OS to v3 so it looks like I’m stuck with this problem.  I may have to upgrade at some time…

Hi Dave, the N70 doesn’t support Java location access - meaning that Java software like the one I wrote can’t talk/listen to external GPS devices and N70 doesn’t have integrated GPS anyways.
