1 million or we kill the St Bernard!

That was the desperate message from the freeride paradise of Super Saint Bernard this week. In June the Swiss Federal Transport Office that controls ski lifts told the tiny ski resort that their lifts needed important work or they would not be able to open for next season. The work is estimated to cost 1 million. This is the last chance for the ski area, opened in 1963 and covering a domain from 1950 m to 2800 meters. They have until just the 15th of September to raise the cash or it is euthanasia for the Saint Bernard.

they could pop down the bookies and place a bet on how long it is before this is reported in the press as “global warming forces ski resort closure” ... although they may not get great odds.

You would have thought that with the bottom runs at 1950 meters they could run a profitable ski resort. Maybe just too far up the valley for anyone other than die-hard TGR types to bother with?
