Swiss glaciers ahve lost 12% of their volume over the last 10 years according to Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Zurich (EPFZ). The volume of water locked up in ice is less than that in lake Geneva. The scientists have published their results based on a new calculation method.

The last decade is the warmest for 150 years and glaciers have lost 9 km cube of ice. The heatwave of 2003 accounted for 2.5 km cube, that is 3.5% of the total. If warming continues average temperatures will be 1.8C warmer in winter and 2.7C warmer in summer by the middle of the century.
