The Chamonix cross country ski area offers around 20km of prepared runs just to the north of the town center. The red Bois run is 11.7km; the Bois du Bouchet is a 3km loop and the Orthaz at the north end of the ski area is 6.3km. There is a biathlon shooting range. It is possible to ski on the Bois du Bouchet on Thursday evenings for free but it is not lit so you'll need a headlamp. Skiing is possible from December to the end of March. Trail passes can be bought in the Ski de Fond house at the start of the trails and there are regular controls on the runs. Street parking is possible north of the cross country house.
