Description

The ski resort of Auron is situated in the Mercantour area of the Alpes Maritimes department in the Southern Alps region. It is part of the Mercantour ski domain and shares a joint lift pass with neighbour Isola 2000 across the valley.

The lift served area extends from 1600 metres to 2450 metres. There are 135 km of lift served runs divided between 2 greens, 16 blues, 15 reds and 9 blacks. There are also 8 off piste itineraries routes.

St Etienne

St Etienne de Tinée

The lift system is extensive and has undergone modernization recently. It includes 3 cable cars and a large park of chair lifts including six seater high speed chairs. The ski area is split over four sectors : Las Donnas, Sauma-Longue, Demandols, Lieuson. There are snow parks in Demandols and Lieuson sectors. The domain is attractive and varied. The Demandols sector is in an isolated and wild valley with very sunny slopes. There is enough skiing for a week’s stay, especially with an excursion to Isola 2000.

Snow cover is slightly poorer compared with Isola which benefits from weather systems on the Italian side of the frontier. There is snow making in the Las Donas sector and on the Dome pistes. An adult lift pass costs 25.30 € (2005-2006 season).

For summer visitors there is a fantastic Via Ferrata with routes of varying difficulty.

History

The village of Auron built its first ski lift in the middle of the 1930s. It is the biggest ski area in the Alpes-Maritimes. Stephanie of Monaco has an apartment in this resort. The lift system has benefited from considerable investment. In the village there is the beautiful St Erige romanesque chapel with frescos dating from 1451.

Off Piste Routes

The ski domain of Auron is ideal for off-piste skiing and is a favourite with the freeriders of the Alpes-Maritimes. As well as 8 off piste itineraries routes there is extensive between the trees skiing. There are a number of steep and interesting slopes. Other off-piste can be reached within a short walk.

A good plan, especially when it is snowing, is to take the la pinatelle cable car from St Etienne. This avoids the climb up to Auron.
