Prabert (GPS: N 45.2506° E 05.9730°, Altitude:1002 m) is a small village reached from the Brignoud exit of the A41 Grenoble to Chambéry autoroute. A narrow departmental road (D528) reaches to a height of 1336 meters and it is possible to drive to 1400 meters in late spring. It is an extremely popular destination with ski mountaineers, snow shoers, walkers and even nordic skiers. On winter Sundays the road and village may see as many as 200 cars parked.
Between mid-December and mid-March the D528 is impractical without chains or snow tires. Even then the frequent use polishes the surface to slick ice and it may be better to park at Prabert. This adds around 300 meters and 3km to any route (about 1 hour climbing). The two main departure points are the Pont de la Betta car park and the "Muret" parking.
Note, since December 2007 traffic is banned on the road above Prabert during the winter months
Prabert has a creperie (Crêperie Les Mirabelles) and a farm shop. There is also a restaurant/bar at les Adrets (La Grange du Bois des Loups - tél./fax 04 76 71 16 91) which is very good. Opening is at lunchtime and weekends.
