Two avalanche incidents in the Southern French Alps

An avalanche in the Foux d'Allos area caught a 44 year old man and his 17 year old daughter around 15h00 today. They were skiing off piste. Suffering from minor injuries they were taken by helicopter to hospital by the PGHM. At 15h30 a ski touring group were descending from the Col du Galibier in the Rocher Noire sector when they triggered a slide. A 46 year old woman was caught by the avalanche but quickly rescued by here 3 friends. She suffered a leg fracture in the incident and had to be heliported to hospital.

The avalanche risk in the Galiber areas was High (4/5) yesterday on all slope angles and altitudes with rain to 2600 meters and a risk of large, natural wet snow slides. The fresh snow and high winds had also formed new windslab resting on a temporary weak layer of new snow.

Not a day or area to be out ski touring.
