Washout

It is a wet bank holiday weekend in the few ski resorts still open. Météo France Grenoble issued an orange weather warning for rain for Mayday with 60 to 80mm rain forecast (that would have been nice as snow in December with very strong winds 80 to 100km/h with the freezing level up to 2800/3000 meters.

All the refuges of the Ecrins that are currently staffed (Aigle, Planchard, Promontoire) have cancelled reservations, with the agreement of their clients, for this weekend. They believe it will be unsafe for mountaineers to be travelling this weekend. The Promontoire had 75 bookings in total. There has been around 30cm of snow at 3000 meters.

There is no full avalanche bulletin. On Thursday Météo France had this to day "The rain on Friday will humidify and weigh down the snowpack causing purges of heavy snow on all slope aspects. At altitude 50 to 100cm of snow is expected accompanied by temporary violent wind from the W to NW which will form large accumulations and slabs with purges also possible. There will be fresh dry and wet snow avalanches, often soft or hard slabs, and frequently large, especially on E to SE lee slopes. The precipitation will ease on Saturday before resuming on Sunday, locally abundant with wind remaining strong at altitude. The avalanche risk is HIGH"
